Those of you who have never participated in NanoWriMo may be wondering what we’re talking about. Well, here is everything you need to know about Nano.

The term ‘Nanowrimo’ is a shortened version of National Novel Writing Month, which is an event that begins the first of every November. The project was established in 1999 in an attempt to keep writers motivated to finish manuscripts and beat writer’s block.

The general idea of the event is to complete a 50,000-word novel in one month: 30 days. That’s about 1667 words a day, so it’s not impossible so long as you stay motivated. Just don’t eat so much turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving that you forget you’re supposed to be writing.

And good news! You won't have to worry about plagiarism as the novels aren’t read by other Nano participants. You write your novel and save it to your computer. You do not type it directly on the NanoWriMo site.

According to the Nano website, over 250 Nanowrimo novels have been traditionally published. They include Sara Gruen’sWater for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Hugh Howey’s Wool, Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, Jason Hough’s The Darwin Elevator, and Marissa Meyer’s Cinder.

If you want to participate, register on the NanoWriMo website, post your profile and information about your novels, and on November 1st start writing. Don't forget to like the Malice Authors page, if you haven't already, and get ready for a month of fun Nano related events!

If you participate as you should, you will have a completed manuscript that you can edit later. Some Nano participants use December as a type of ‘revision’ month.

Good luck! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
